17th Century Dragoons are a powerful, specialized unit. They have a high ranged attack and a very high number of hitpoints. These dragoons also possess the speed of heavy cavalry units. These attributes make dragoons powerful geurilla fighters, able to harass the enemy, slowly eating away at its army. A very useful geurilla tactic is simply killing a formation's officer, destroying the formation's morale and ability to defend itself. A small group of dragoons needs to flank a formation(if it is in line or rank) or simply get the officer within range(if the troops are in box formation). Quickly kill the officer, and run back to safety. There is another useful tactic that dragoons are adept at, hit and run(or parthian tactics). Parthian tactics is a tactic in which a unit simply fires at the pursuing enemy, retreating to a safer range when the enemy is too close. This geurilla strategy slowly eats away at a player's army with very little losses. These units are largely restricted to guerilla fighting, because they train so slowly, permitting mass production which would enable them to play a large part in the bulk of the army. By the time that a player researches the appropriate technology that increases mounted unit's training speed, he/she will most likely be in the 18th Century, where he/she can train the more powerful 18th Century Dragoon. 17th Century dragoons are useful geurilla fighters, making the enemy's army weak enough to crumble under the player's main army.

Although 18th Century Dragoons are similar to 17th Century Dragoons, they play a much different role in a typical army. Their increased training speed, due to proper technologies being researched, allows them to be able to be massed enough that they can play a part in the bulk of the army. They have high hitpoints, making them much more resiliant to enemy fire than their infantry counterparts. 18th Century Dragoons also have a high attack, giving a formation the power to drop whole groups of soldiers in a single volley. This power does come at a price, which is the inability to fight hand-to-hand. The inability to fight with a sword, pike, or bayonnet forces them to only be a support force, rather than the core of the 18th Century Army. Though, support from Dragoons can turn the tide in a battle, or even a game. Dragoons are vulnerable to a flanking cavalry charge, so do not allow them to stray too far from your infantry. 18th Century Dragoons are able to conduct the guerilla tactics like that of their 17th century cousins, but they usually are best used in a nation's main army/ies.
