Yachts, quite frankly, are not very powerful. They have low hitpoints and a high reload time. But they are cheap to build & service and are quickly made, along with being available to be built immediately when a shipyard is built. These attributes make yachts excellent in early naval battles. They can defend a fishing fleet quite well, as several can be made wit the same amount of resources that 1 larger ship requires to be built with. Yachts are also useful in attacking the fishing fleets of their enemies, as they are quite expendable and will not harm the attacker a great deal if the yacht/s is/are destroyed.

Galleys are useful war ships to be used by a nation who's economy is somewhat stable and strong. This is due to the fact that they are somewhat expensive, although they do not require any expensive technologies to be researched in order that it can be built. Galleys fire considerably faster than yacht, although they do not have a higher attack. The hitpoints of a galley exceeds a yacht's by 19,000, giving them a significant advantage. The forward mounted cannons of a galley enables the ship to fire at an enemy while the galley is sailing to a closer range, in order that the cannonballs are more accurate and damaging. Side mounted cannon cannot to that, giving galleys another advantage over the other warships of its time.

Frigates are an excellent blend of the power of a battleship and the price of a yacht. They have equal hipoints and attack of the galley, but are much cheaper and fire faster. Frigates are generally the core of a late 17th- early/mid 18th Century fleet, as they do require a particular technology to be researched in order that frigates can be built. But when frigates finally are used in naval battles, they show themselves to be very powerful, especially considering their low price to build. Their side mounted cannons allow them to take advantage of the large naval battles occuring during this period of the game. They are able to quickly move from side to side or rotate minutely so that they are able to engage another ship. Front mounted cannons have a tougher time doing this, giving frigates an advantage in semi-organized, large battles.

Battleships are the ultimate warship of the oceans. Their hitpoints dwarf that of any other warship in the seas. Friring their side-mounted cannon faster than any other warship, battleships can make short work of frigates or galleys. Lobbing countless screaming balls of iron into the decks of the enemy, battleships rule the seas. But this unmatchable power comes at an incredible price. Battleships are inhumanly expensive to build, much less service. Battleships also build more slowly than any other warship. This makes battleships the war machines of only the most rich and powerful nations.
