Pikemen are the core of almost every 17th Century army, unless the civilization is a heavily cavalry one. Pikemen are trained relatively quickly, and are rather cheap. Armed with a pike, they are able to make at least one attack before an opposing force of non-pikemen reaches attack range. In order to make optimum use of these soldiers, it is best to group them in tight formations. Tight formations mean that soldiers with a "pseudo-range" behind the front line can still attack, without moving out of formation. Expanding on this point, pikemen in a formation can support several of their nearby partners, in all directions. Though, there is one downside to tight formations, a single shot from a cannon or howitzer can kill most of the troops in the formation. Even with that downside, they still are an important part of a 17th Century army, as they do not have to reload, like musketeers, and are trained much faster than their musket armed counterparts.

Although 18th Century pikemen are much cheaper and are trained much, much faster than their 17th Century counterparts, they only play a minor role in the 18th Century Army. The advance in technology and economy, which allows musketeers to fire much more quickly and with more power, makes them the core of most 18th Century armies. Though, pikemen still play an importanty role in the musket-dominated army. They are superb front line troops, holding off the enemy so that musketeers are able to use their muskets, rather than being forced to use bayonnets. The pseudo-range of the 17th Century pikemen are kept with the 18th Century pikemen, which means that they are excellent in tight formations. Aside from being powerful front line troops, pikemen can save a city whose walls have been breached. The sheer speed and low price that 18th Century pikemen are trained means that a player can put several pikemen armies into the field, in order to hold off the enemy while reinforcements are coming or/and to allow more powerful troops to be trained. 18th Century pikemen do not dominate the 18th Century battlefield, but they do play very important roles.

The Roundshiers were the last surviving melee infantry in the Austrian army. They were to wait until enemy musketeers had ceased firing while reloading, and they would attack. Along with the strelets, spearman formed the basis of the Russian army. In fact, some strelet regiments fought with the pike instead of the musket, so that they could repel a cavalry charge. The Light infantry of the Turkish and Algerian armies were made up of many tribesman from places across the empire. They were savage, oftentimes brutal soldiers, that could strike fear into the hearts of enemies. However, like many irregular and poorly-organized forces, they were very unstable and could be routed by disciplined troops. The Light infantry are armed with sabers, and have very low attack. They are most effective when placed into formations. Light infantry can be massed together fairly quickly, and when combined with archers, can spell trouble to their enemies.

The Ottoman Pikemanís mission was to defend the janissaries from cavalry charges and to counterattack attacking enemies. The pikeman were very valuable during the 17th Century, when muskets required a long amount of time to reload between shots. The Ottoman Pikeman are cheap and quick-to-create, and provide excellent support for the janissaries of the Turkish armies. They also have an attack bonus towards cavalry.
